Title:Chinese Global Investments in Renewable Energy: Evidence from a New Project-Level Database
Speaker: Yuk-Shing Cheng, Director, Centre for Sustainable Development Studies, Professor, Department of Accountancy, Economics and Finance, Hong Kong Baptist University
Moderator: Xu Xiuli, Dean of CIDGA, Professor of COHD, CAU
Time:10:30-12:00, Monday, November 10th, 2025
Venue: Room 7318, New Library, East Campus of CAU
Overview: Energy transition has been widely recognized as a crucial approach to addressing climate change and achieving sustainable development. China’s technological progress in renewable energy and the expansion of production capacity significantly transformed its domestic energy mix. Chinese companies have also expanded their overseas activities tremendously through various forms of investment. However, their motivations, strategies and outcomes have not been rigorously analyzed, primarily because of a lack of data. To fill this gap, we have constructed a unique database—the China Global Investment in Renewable Energy database (CGIRE)—through comprehensive identification and rigorous validation. The database is continually updated and already covers more than 1,000 investment projects across 63 countries over the past two decades. These investments comprise roughly 900 power-generation projects and 100 manufacturing facilities. Regression results suggest that Chinese companies invest more in countries that have renewable-energy support policies and greater decarbonization pressure, proxied by per-capita carbon emissions.
Introduction to the Speaker: Yuk-Shing Cheng is Professor of Economics at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Adelaide. From 2014 to 2021 he served as Head of the Department of Economics, and from September 2023 to December 2024 he was Interim Dean of the School of Business. In July 2022 he founded the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and has been its Director ever since.
Professor Cheng's research focuses on China's institutions and development, covering income inequality, rural institutions, fiscal decentralisation, regional disparities, state-owned enterprises, foreign trade, energy and the environment. He has published extensively in leading international journals such as the Economic Journal, Journal of Development Economics, Transportation Research and Energy Policy, as well as in area/country studies outlets including The China Quarterly and Asian Survey, and in top Chinese-language journals such as China Social Sciences in China, Economic Research Journal and Chinese Rural Economy.
He has examined Hong Kong's role as a financial centre in China's economic development and transformation, particularly in promoting the internationalization of the renminbi. In 2017 he and co-authors published the English monograph Hong Kong's Global Financial Centre and China's Development: Changing Roles and Future Prospects (Routledge). He has led four research projects funded by the Research Grants Council of the Hong Kong SAR Government. In recent years he has concentrated on the impact of China's foreign aid and investment on Global South countries and is building a comprehensive database on Chinese outward investment in the new-energy sector.
