Title: Water and Development: From Critical Geography to Country and Region Studies

Speaker: Raymond Yu Wang  Associate Professor and Research Fellow at the Center for Social Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech)

Moderator: Ba Feng  Assistant Professor of CIDGA, COHD, CAU

Time: 15:30-17:00, Tuesday, October 14th, 2025

Venue: Room 7318, New library, East Campus of CAU

Language: Chinese

Overview: Water is an essential element that supports agricultural modernization, urbanization, as well as regional and global development. However, its importance in development studies has not been fully explored. This presentation first explains the regional, integrative, relational, and dialectical perspectives of critical geography. It then attempts to reveal the complex interactions between water, technology, power, and development through trans-local and cross-scale studies of hydrosocial systems, such as irrigation, urban waterscapes, and transboundary navigational systems. The aim is to demonstrate how water and hydraulic infrastructure shape national and regional institutions, economies, ecologies, and development paths. Critical geography emphasizes the interrelations and mutual constitution between development practices and local contexts, offering theoretical insights for a deeper understanding of alternative development paths of different regions and countries, while also supporting the construction of development knowledge for the Global South.

Introduction to the Speaker: Dr. Raymond Yu Wang is an Associate Professor and Research Fellow at the Center for Social Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). Dr. Wang is the editor-in-chief of International Journal of Water Resources Development and an editorial board member of Water Alternatives. Before joining SUSTech, Dr. Wang served as an Associate Professor in the School of Government at Sun Yat-sen University. Dr. Wang’s research, grounded in political geography and political ecology, primarily explores the intersections of environmental governance, modernization, and social-ecological transformations in the Global South, with a special focus on Greater China and Southeast Asia. His work encompasses diverse topics related to water and land, including irrigation institutions, regional and transboundary water governance, hydraulic infrastructures, land development and urbanization, and public participation. Dr. Wang’s research has garnered support from various funding bodies, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Ministry of Education, and the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province. His scholarly contributions have been published in prestigious journals such as The China Quarterly, Journal of Contemporary China, Regulation & Governance, Ecology & Society, and Land Use Policy. In addition to his research, he also holds membership in multiple academic organizations, including the Cultural Geography Committee and the Political Geography Committee of the Chinese Geographical Society, the Environmental Sociology Committee of the Chinese Sociological Society.
